Pat Iyer, veteran LNC and former owner of a multimillion-dollar business, shares her expertise on the all-important subject of getting your LNC invoices paid.
Collections issues can present difficulties for the beginning LNC entrepreneur. When you’re accustomed to getting a regular paycheck, the idea of asking for money and sending out invoices can feel intimidating. You can overcome this issue by establishing a systematic approach to billing. By doing this, you establish a consistent set of procedures that the client can understand and follow.
Pat advises that you always get a retainer prior to actually doing any work. This gives you more freedom in asking for subsequent payments. Establishing a system of replenishing payments is the most efficient way to do this.
Pat also recommends raising your rates regularly, based on cost-of-living adjustments and other factors. Give your clients advance notification.
Finally, know your limitations. If a proposed job doesn’t fall into your realm of expertise, consider outsourcing it. This can create the basis for your becoming a supplier of experts, a strategy that was a key aspect of Pat’s business success.

Pat Iyer MSN RN LNCC established a highly successful independent LNC business in 1989. She grew Med League to become a multimillion-dollar business which provided expert witnesses and did behind the scenes consulting. She trained hundreds of expert witnesses and supervised a staff of employees and subcontractors. After selling Med League in 2015, she returned to legal nurse consulting after a 6-year hiatus and currently serves a small group of attorneys.
