Being an expert witness encompasses a wide range of responsibilities and perspectives. Here to discuss some key issues are LNC Pat Iyer, host of this show, and physician and expert Amy Fogelman.

We stressed the importance of efficiency in a number of areas. A primary one is the it’s essential for an expert to take responsibility for keeping track of cases. The case that it’s at the top of your mind may not even be hovering in a lawyer’s awareness. Their paralegals are doing their best to keep things organized. It’s up to you to save yourself from surprises like, “Remember that case? It’s going to court next week.”

This kind of efficiency extends to your communications with clients and potential clients. Always reach out to a prospect as quickly as you can and set up systems to assure a smooth flow of discussion and understanding of your policies.

Also, be very clear on what kind of work you do. Staying in your lane is essential for an expert. If you take on something out of your area of expertise, it will reflect negatively on your record.

Be meticulous about billing. Don’t allow a client to accrue a big bill and be as honest as you can in terms of estimating expenses.

Overall, Pat and Amy clearly expressed their shared principles of integrity in the performance of their work. When integrity guides you, your chances of success are much higher than those of less dedicated practitioners.

She grew Med League to become a multimillion-dollar business which provided expert witnesses and did behind the scenes consulting. She trained hundreds of expert witnesses and supervised a staff of employees and subcontractors. After selling Med League in 2015, she returned to legal nurse consulting after a 6-year hiatus and currently serves a small group of attorneys.
