602 Understanding Hospice: Expert Advice for LNCs – Yvonne Hanson

Yvonne Hanson

In this podcast titled Understanding Hospice: Expert Advice for LNCs, Yvonne Hanson, who is an expert on hospice care and a passionate advocate for the necessity of excellent care in this area, shares her expertise.

This care can take place in a specific hospice facility, in a skilled nursing facility, or at home–or wherever the patient is. Specific criteria supplied by Medicare apply regarding the eligibility of an individual, even if a private supplier is providing services.

The most important question is whether the person wants hospice and where. Once that and the other criteria are met, the patient is assigned a team of professionals to meet his or her needs.

Unfortunately, hospice care, like all areas of health care in the U.S. is suffering from staff shortages, income problems, and other issues. This can lead to inadequate care, which is where the LNC may enter the picture. Yvonne urges anyone with a hospice case to consult with an expert in the field because of its differences from other medical practices.

Although Yvonne addresses in detail the problems in the hospice structure, she also emphasizes that sometimes, with devoted care, patients get better and leave the hospice setting. She adds that, however her work ends, she greatly values her relationship with the patients entrusted to her care.
