Incorrect wound care and management can lead to pain, sepsis, and even death. Here to discuss the details of wound nursing is Thureiyya Rodriguez, legal nurse consultant and Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse.
If you, as an LNC, need to find an expert witness in this area of wound care, it’s important for you to know the certifications offered by a number of wound-related organizations, as the qualifications vary considerably. You must also determine that the expert witness you select has qualifications equal to that of the opposing attorney’s expert.
The LNC also needs to identify the chain of command and responsibility. Thureiyya explains that distinctions regarding responsibility can get blurred. The wound care specialist is a consultant, one who prepares a treatment plan for the bedside nurse. Sometimes the attending physician overrules their recommendations. When things go wrong, the LNC needs to know who is ultimately responsible.
Thureiyya also explains debridement and who is qualified to perform sharp debridement. There are many aspects to this treatment, and here again, for the LNC, this is an issue of who’s responsible if things go wrong. She also describes chemical debridement, a painless and slower way to treat wound tissue.
This podcast reveals the complexities involved in wound treatment. You will want to absorb its information and keep it for future reference.
