You have probably had the experience of being treated by a nurse practitioner (NP) in a general medical practice. Kenyetta Christmas, an acute care NP, takes you into the far more fast-paced world of the ICU, where NPs play a large and vital role.
Her description of the complexity of patient issues, which often lead to the administration of a wide range of drips and medications, makes it clear how easily things can go wrong. That NPS typically, in the ICU setting, work with more patients than other nurses, adds to the challenges. The relationship between an NP and physician is particularly interesting. In Kenyetta’s practice, these two are often paired. Depending on the State in which they practice, their roles may significantly overlap.
Kenyetta also describes the function of rapid response teams, which she shares are responsible for sharply reducing the number of patient crises. She attributes some of these successful interventions to a nurse intuitively knowing something was wrong. As a nurse, you will appreciate this recognition.
The unique value an NP brings to her or his role is demonstrated by surveys taken regarding patient satisfaction. Overall, people consistently rate their satisfaction with NPS as higher than that with physicians. This is a statistic in which any nurse can take pride.
Kenyetta is one of many NPs who takes on cases as a nursing expert. As an LNC, you need to understand both her role and her world. This podcast opens that door. Watch this episode of Legal Nurse Podcast.
