In this podcast, Writing LNC Articles for Publication, Pat Iyer, multi-published author and LNC, gives you a step-by-step guide to writing, submitting, and revising articles for publication.
First, you need to know who your target audience is. You may want to write for fellow LNCs. This is an excellent way to make contacts and connections. If you choose to write for attorneys (and you can do both), you want to subtly impress them with your expertise. After they read your article on new developments in sepsis, for example, you want them to think of you first when they have a sepsis case.
Your headline is all important. Pat recommends using artificial intelligence programs to generate both headlines and subtitles, and she shows you how.
She describes various ways to structure an article, including outlining and mind mapping. Depending on how you organize your thoughts, one of these is likely to work well for you.
The format of an article is essential. Structural elements like subheads, bulleted and numbered lists, and other design elements help guide the reader through the article.
You want to be able to include autobiographical and contact information. Just don’t make it a “Hire Me!” plea.
The editor of the journal may ask others for peer reviews. You can help yourself by getting your own selected peers to read it. This will reduce revision needs. Consider revision suggestions carefully and objectively. Often, they genuinely improve the article. Only question them if you feel they are completely wrong. Editors will remember difficult authors.
