If one word describes the development of Samantha Parkhurst’s LNC career, it’s persistence. She has never hesitated to approach people for help and has refused to surrender to discouragement over those who haven’t responded.
These LNC has gone into Chicago lawyers’ offices with folders containing her resumes and other information, and she has approached strangers at conferences and networking events. She has never turned down the chance to explore a new area of LNC work like medical cost projection and reasonableness of charges.
Samantha is brave, and she’s also careful. She doesn’t accept every opportunity that comes her way. If an attorney proposes that she work on a case in a field with which she’s unfamiliar, she takes the path of honesty, being truthful about her lack of knowledge. If she’s offered work in an area, she thinks she can learn, she says that and asks for coaching.
She’s equally honest when she’s made a mistake and advises other LNCs to admit to errors as soon as they discover them and to devise the best solution available.
As a subcontractor, she says that those who take on this kind of work must always recognize that the LNC who has hired them is their boss. The boss makes the rules, and it’s up to the subcontractor to follow them.
Samantha has built her career with a blend of daring and caution that can serve as a model to any beginning LNC.
