Karen Taylor, an ICU veteran, decided to open a full-time LNC practice right before the pandemic. She quickly recalibrated, shifting her marketing efforts to online platforms, and she learned to fully utilize LinkedIn’s networking features.
She landed some clients directly but found that she was receiving many more invitations to do subcontracting work. At that point, she realized that marketing wasn’t her niche, and she achieved a mindset that allowed her to shift from marketing directly to attorneys to focusing on subcontracting.
If one word would describe what this mindset is, it would be “receptivity.” Subcontracting has advantages and disadvantages, and someone considering this form of work needs to weigh both aspects. Once having chosen this career, she or he needs to make the most of the opportunities to have a valuable form of supervision and to learn from a more experienced practitioner.
It also means—and this applies to anyone—to saying “yes” to opportunities. Karen says that she may say “yes” to something she doesn’t know how to do. Though she advises caution about straying too far beyond your skillset, if the opportunity seems possible to realize, you can always ask others for advice.
Whether you’re considering becoming a subcontractor or have a busy practice and need to subcontract some of your work, you’ll benefit from learning how a thoroughly professional subcontractor looks at her work.

Jane Shufro never planned to become an LNC, but when she got an unexpected phone call asking her to review a case, she recognized the opportunity and has never regretted taking it.
During the 11 years since she first entered this field, she has learned a lot, and this podcast provides information that can help the new LNC develop their skills and give the seasoned practitioners the opportunity to review their work.
In terms of practical, foundational abilities, Jane emphasizes good grammar and writing skills, familiarity with computers, and the ability to network.
Some of what she’s learned, though, is more subtle. In terms of gaining and keeping attorney clients, you need excellent listening skills. Attorneys lead stressful lives, and if you’re there to listen to them vent (obviously within reason), they will value you and return with more cases.
Jane also emphasizes the importance of meeting deadlines. Miss a deadline and lose a client.
She also was careful to debunk some of the myths about the LNC profession. You can’t just walk into it, and you won’t get rich quickly. Those new to the field will especially benefit from her wisdom on these subjects.
If you’re looking for a clear-eyed, practical viewpoint from an LNC who loves her work, you will enjoy and learn from this podcast.

Pat Iyer, host of this podcast and LNC Business owner, usually recommends that legal nurse consultants allow 3-5 years to develop a full-time practice. She is delighted to showcase an exception to that flexible rule. Ashley Moreau began her LNC Business practice in 2020, four months after the pandemic began. Prior to that time, she’d been working in a nursing home. Although she loved working there, the rigid schedules and greatly worsening conditions caused by COVID restrictions and staff shortages, accelerated her decision to become an independent LNC.
She planned carefully before leaving her job, saving as much money as she could, and determining how she would publicize and promote her fledgling business. She has made great use of LinkedIn, both to make connections and to meet potential subcontractors. In addition, she has worked with local organizations in Louisiana.
Ashley is a strong advocate of using subcontractors, saying that being able to provide this service to an attorney helps to encourage them to call on you again and again. She acknowledges that it’s crucial to provide quality control for subcontractors’ reports. She won’t allow any report that isn’t up to standard go out with her name on it.
She believes in doing some marketing every day. That’s part of having a business.
If you are a beginning LNC or considering establishing a practice, this podcast can inspire you to take the leap and make the full commitment to your business.
